Hi,

Please see photo in my 'Gutters' album (URL below just in case):

Originally I had no down pipe from my upper gutter. But it broke and when someone came to fix it they added a down pipe, and this is where my problems began. The lower gutter is now overflowing (during heavy rain) and water is going into my boiler flue!

The original solution was to run a down pipe from the upper gutter to the lower gutter (see photo) but lower gutter overflowed. The second solution (current situation) was to have the down pipe let the water flow over the peak of the lower roof so that half the water goes my side and half next door, but it still overflows.

I think I need a completely new solution which doesn't involve water from the upper gutter going into the lower gutter at all, as the lower gutter just can't cope with any additional water. But I was hoping to get some expert opinions before calling anyone out, as I've already spent quite a bit on this. It's only a problem in heavy rain, but because of the position of my boiler flue, I'm quite anxious to get it sorted once and for all.

And while I'm asking, is there anyone in the Stoke-on-Trent area who thinks they could help with this?

Many thanks,
Dave

A solution that you could do yourself would be to remove the guttering above the boiler (half round) which holds the least amount of water and replace with (ogee) guttering which will hold three times more capacity.

Thanks for that. I will definitely look into that.

I wonder if anyone had any thoughts on the down pipe. During heavy rain, because there is such a huge amount of water coming from the down pipe down in a single column, I think that contributes to the overflowing. Is there any way to distribute the water from the down pipe over a bigger area - to create a wider column or multiple columns?

A short-term quick fix would be to fix some aluminium sheet above the boiler flue to deflect the overflow. It could be fixed to the soffit and must not obstruct the circulation around the flue.

Another option would be to increase the capacity of the lower gutter using something like this: http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Black-High-Capacity-Gutter-Length-4000mm/p/114630

Just needs a length of gutter to suit, a running outlet and a couple of stop-ends plus brackets.
