Hi All,

I’m planning to paint my Hall, Landing and Stairs after some recent work to the property. Had a new loft hatch this has done some damage. I've also had new doors fitted and this has done some damage around the door frames. Please see pictures below

What would be the best way to repair these gaps before painting? Just standard filler then sand or so I need something a bit more as the gaps are a bit bigger than just cracks?

I’ve also got some flakey paint

What’s the best way to prep and paint this?

One last thing, quite a large gap has opened up at the joint to the UPVC front door, any advice on how to fill this?

One last question, is it best to lightly sand the walls before painting. The walls are just white paint onto bare plaster.

Really appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Rob.

I would use a sharp chisel so clean up the edges of the architraves. Then sand those edges where they meet the plaster. If they are not bouncing, you can use a soft filler such as Red Devil Red Time. It is a lightweight filler that is a dream to sand (wrap 150ish grit paper around a sanding block to maintain a 90 degree edge where the plaster meets the timber). A big advantage of the Red Devil filler is that any dust will hoover up without issue- powder based fillers stick to everything. It is very slightly flexible.

Before doing so, push the architraves to see if they move. If they do you have a number of options. One would be to push in rigid filler. Another would be to use a foam gun to lock the architrave and then cut away the excess when cured.
