Handle on door sagging

Hi the handle on my door is sagging/loose and I can't turn the circle cover on the handle to access the screws. I've tried using a jar opener gripper. Any ideas on how I can gain access I have a feeling the screws have come away from the wood. Thanks

You carefully prise off the circular cover, it doesn't unscrew - there may be a small notch at the bottom of the ring, that a screwdriver may be inserted into, to help lever it off.

Not too me , the screw on has a sharper angle on the edges.

OP can you take a photo looking up, normally the screw or slot would be at the bottom where it's out of sight, but you may have to take the cover off the lock to get access to the handle screw/slot.

I recently had to paint doors where the "cap"/cover was held in place by a grub screw. Naturally the grub screw was on the underside, which means that you have to remove the lower thumb turn and cover before you can remove the upper one.

I have a friend that occasionally wraps his belt around the fitting to be removed and uses adjustable pliers to prevent scratching rather than using it Boa style.

Thanks all for your advice. I've just bought a boa constructor wrench to see if it can help remove the cover to see what's going on.

Have you tried just levering it off? A kitchen knife will do.

The strap wrench did the trick and I was able to gain access. The screws were threaded and bent. New screws same size capped are still moving around.

what would be the best way to sort this ?

could I fill the screw hole with an epoxy based wood filler ?
