Hello,
I want to hang some 5 bar gates on our drive entrance piers. The piers are 18"x18". Can I hang the gates directly onto the piers, our would it be better to mount some wood onto the pier first and then screw/bolt the fixings onto the wood ?
Many Thanks

Yes nothing wrong with hanging the gates directly onto the piers so long as they are upright.

Yes use hook & band hinges, the hooks are on a plate that is screwed to the wall or peir & the bands arescrewed to the gate if it's wood type, (if it's a steel 5 bar gate the bands should be on the gate) but there is no way of adjusting for the level of the gates using them hence the peirs must be level.

Thanks for your responses.

Can you tell me how I would attach the bottom band on a a five bar gate, as I don't beleive that any of the horizontal braces are wide/thick enough to take a band hinge ? A picture would be very useful if someone else has done this !?
Thanks

Having hung and just re-hung  a 5 bar gate, I would definitely use bolts instead of long screws, the holes must be pre-drilled for the bolts though, if not you'll probably shear them off.

Regarding screwing the plates to the brick piers, should I use normal nylon raw plugs to should I use the stronger metal sheild anchors, as they 5 bar gates will obviously be very heavy ?

Thanks
