Not sure if this is the right forum, but doesn't really fall neatly under any of the others!

I want to hang a wooden double gate across my drive, between the house and an outhouse. The drive is fairly narrow and I don't have room for gate posts -- can I bolt the gate hinges straight to the wall of the house? If so, are there any particular fixings I should use?

Cheers

I would suggest using expanding bolts. (screwfix call them shield anchors). Trouble is, these normally come with bolt heads (which will not fit inside your hinge. So once you have tightened them in the wall, undo the bolts and replace with a countersunk zink plated screws with the same thread.

Also make sure you put something in the middle to stop the gates swinging the wrong way. Otherwise with the four foot leverage of the gate, it will probably still rip out the fittings or split the wood.

Anchor bolts are available with counter sunk/allen heads. They are commonly used on threshold bars on industrial doors. Any good engineers merchant should have them

Also might be best to make a single gate instead of double which will give you an extra width of the gate thickness on one side instead of 2.
