Hey all.....1st post :)

Looking to hang a wooden chair in second TV room.

Would ceiling joists be strong enough to hold this?

Any advice would be ace.

Thanks.

My gut instinct (in a better quality victorian house) is yes but I do not know if the coach bolts screwed in to the end grain of the joists will compromise them.

You don't mention what size the joists are or how heavy the chair plus occupant(s) will be. Nor do you mention how far along the span of the joist you will be going (or what is above). I assume that the chair will swing, that adds extra stresses.

I suspect that you need to provide more info for others more knowledgeable than me to advise further.

I did that in our old house - I screwed a course threaded hook into a joist for one of those hanging wicker chairs. Mind you, I weighed a bit less 38 years ago!

Cheers for the replies.

Abit more info.

House was built in 2001, not sure size of joists. I'm guessing there is a regular size? There won't be any swinging going on(joke there somewhere) and only 2 max will use it(wife and daughter), both are light.

If its gong to compromise strength then i'll bin the idea.

Spread the load across 2 joists rather than fixing it lengthwise with both fixings in the same joist.
Try to keep it near to the end of the joists rather than in the middle of the ceiling.
Do you have a picture of the actual chair that you could put on here? It may help with suggestions.

Added picture within media file - under "swing chair"

I may add some timber say across 4 joists and then bolt the chair the the timber. Maybe that will even the load?
