Hello, i am tiling my bathroom and just after advise on hardibacker board. is it advisable to use instead of plastboard? the only real wet area is a shower over the bath, where i was thinking to use hardibacker. or is this a bit unnecessary? thanks

You should use hardibacker where ever a region is likely to get wet, so a shower over a bath is a good place to use it.

Hardibacker is more expensive than plasterboard but not much so any savings by scrimping on it are not going to be much.

Plasterboard does not like getting wet. You could use PB and tank the area which would also be adequate.

It would also depend on what tiles you are using. If they are large and heavy then PB wont be enough to hold them.
 
dont forget, if you are using hardie backerboards, get the hardie screws and fiba tape, ordinary screw are no good, they will be proud of the surface
