hardwearing shelf

hi
i want to make an mdf shelf as hardwearing as possible ( without covering it in ssteel or something). i could do with some advice about putting a varnish over a gloss paint. would this be more hardwearing than just the paint or would i be wasteing my time.

I don't think you'll find any MDF particularly hard wearing, but you could try a specialist paint from the International group...probably as good as you'll get.

I suppose what i was wanting to know was ....is a gloss paint more hardwearing than a varnish.

yacht varnish,couple of good coats and i dont think your have any problems
