We moved into a 70's bungalow recently and found it had strawboard walls. I was all ready to run additional wiring and re-route pipes to radiators, when I had a conversation with a neighbour who told that there were vertical holes every foot down the centre of the panels.
The electricians who did the first installation used them for the switch drops but the plumbers who installed the central heating in the 80's dropped all the pipes down the walls on the surface.
I was able to re-route all the pipes and conceal them within the walls. Very satisfying.
Another benefit was that kitchen wall units could be fixed at any point into the strawboard and when I moved one of the internal walls all I did was move the existing wallboards.
Oddly the building inspector rubbished the Stramit walls but didn't offer any constructive reason.
Anyway I love them and they are very eco friendly.
