Have I Been Had?

Shutpa

Heard a squeak coming (I thought), from my brakes so took the car into the garage and paid out £620.00 for new brakes all round. That was on Friday. This morning the squeak returned

That sounds like a fair old sum, but it depends on which car it is, and exactly what you had done.
I imagine they've replaced all of the discs / drums all round, together with pads / shoes and replaced the brake fluid.
Did you ask the garage just to renew all of the brakes irrespective, or just to investigate the squeal?

couple of possibilities,

assuming its had 4 new disks/drums and new pads all round.

  • cheap pads, cheap pads are known to squeak.
  • haven't used something like ceratec on the reverse of the pad.. copper grease is an alternative but some people frown upon it... ceratec is designed for that purpose.
  • warped hub, so even with new disk the run out exceeds tolerances.. should of been measured with a dial test indicator.
  • handbrake sticking or poorly adjusted

I must admit I've not heard of this product, will use it next time I try and correct the goddam squeal on my own brakes. Discs, pads, copper grease, still no result :(

Me neither....never had a system where I couldn't stop the squeal though.
I do reckon that if the squeal is very persistent, that a glazed disc is the most likely culprit, but that may be sticking my neck out :p
I notice that some pads have a sticky shim on the backplate though, and that's sure to sort it!

Back to the original post though....I was in e-citroen Newcastle today, and the menu pricing was Front discs / pads (from) £225 Rear discs / pads (from) £275 so from now my prices are heading upwards :p

One thing that helped, was cleaning up the slider pin bushes (ATE brakes) with some alcohol and re-lubing with silicone grease. This stops the pins sticking and (in my own theory) helps the calliper return to position.

Being non specific and asking for "new brakes" is risking being had!

That could cover:-

Just new pads

New pads and discs

New pads, discs and cylinders.

Then comes the makers genuine parts or pattern parts about 1/3 the price!

I would expect to put copper grease behind the pads when fitting to stop/reduce squeal.
