hi there guys,
this might sound a bit adventurous but i am thinking of having a go a re-tiling my roof. can anyone tell me if i am mad or if i should be ok to have a go. what are the likely pitfalls of doing it myself i appreciate it is going to take me a lot longer than an experienced roofer, is this a problem, for instance can i protect a aginst bad weather i might be able to enlist a couple of people to help but they know as much as me, apart from the obvious saving it is something i would relly like to have a go at
thanks
Bill

strip the old off and get it lathe 'n' felted as quick as poss.

you can speed the lathing up by only fitting every fourth lathe. you can fill in the gaps later on. this method applies to a plain tile roof only, where the gauge is 100mm.

as you fit lathes and get nearer to the ridge, check the gap with a tape measure. if necessary, you can tighten the gauge on say, the last ten courses as no one will notice. never widen the gauge.

noseall, thanks for the reply, where can i get advice on how to do it, for instance, how do i know the spacing for the laths, i would imagine they have to be level is this done with a spirit level or what, what sort of felt do i need
thanks again

the tiles dictate the gauge. plain tiles are usually 100mm apart and interlocking tiles require a headlap of 75-100mm

the first lathe is positioned so that there is 55-65mm of overhang beyond the fascia.

some roofers use a dye drenched 'flick line' which is held taught across the gauge marks and flicked to give a straight lathe fixing line.

if none of this is making any sense, you need to hire a roofer.
