Mother has asked me to post about her HDD DVD Recorder. It's fine if she's just watching TV through it, but whenever she goes to record or watch something on the hard drive, it's making a buzzing/humming noise - is it the hard drive that's knackered or on it's way out?

Difficult to say.

Could it be coil whine? Can happen when certain voltages are put through a coil, rarely means it is on its way out.

Hard drives do make a scraching spinning noise, often too quiet to hear unless you are in a *very* quit room.

It's a Dual DPVR801 (came out of Asda years ago - she's got no idea how long but possibly Noah brought it over on the ark!!)

The humming noise is fairly recent and it is quite audible - even above all the racket in her house

I'm not sure if there's a fan on it or not but it's silent if she's just watching a TV channel through it, but if she goes to the library to view recordings, watch a recording or indeed record anything, the humming/buzzing noise starts. It falls silent again about 5 minutes after she's stopped using anything on the hard drive

it's the Hard Drive, sounds like the spindle or bearings are starting to make a noise after general wear and tear. If that is the case, when the noise is happening you might also be able to hear a "crunching" noise from the hard drive if you put your ear close to it when someting is being played off the Hard Drive ("crunching" is not a technical term, its just the closest word i can ever think of to describe it!)

Those are internal components of the Hard Drive, so they can't really be changed (its usually much easier to just replace the drive).

That doesn't mean the drive is about to fail imminently though, she should still be able to use it for a while.

A future planning question would be to think about whether she would want to keep the same DVR and replace the hard drive in future, or just by a newer DVR. The cheaper DVR's dont always come with instructions on how to replace and reformat the Hard Drive, but a quick google search of any model number should find that out

Thank you :D No doubt she'll expect me to replace the hard drive but I'll have a look about at how much a replacement would be so I can at least give her a comparison between a new hard drive and a new recorder
