heat loss calc

Just been working heating system for a quote, took all measurements and questions to customer then sat down and worked out btu long hand :D

Three bed detached, lounge/dining, kitchen, bath hallway, landing and rad in conni. (9 off). I got 38130 :eek:

Tried a couple of these tinternet calcs, First 33130 and second....................................................................................................................................Wait for it ........wait for it.......51330.


Who's right :?: the second site.

Do i need a new calc :?: as i could'nt get the bathroom tiles right last week :eek: :eek: :oops:

I never bother with these sites. I stick to my 2 Mears calculators.

here's the way I work it out. Find the place for the radiator, and then put the biggest one that will fit within reason.

You might say i'm stupid for doing this but there is method in my madness but only provided you do it across the whole system! But you've got to get them all oversized by a similar amount.

Bigger radiator = lower flow temperature = More condensing = less money (long term).

Also the calcs, assume a steady state. They don't tell you how long it will take the room to heat up to the steady state. I always size for the transient state.
 
ARRRGH, with you sanjay, so calc says concidering all heat loss adjustments 7900btu =600x1400 double, but I have enough room to fit a 600x2300 in at 12980btu.

I did say within reason! also i would work in kW and not BTU's
 
If you want a reasonably accurate ball-park figure for the size of boiler you need, the Recommended Boiler Size Calculator at Sedbuk is as good as any. It works on the "whole house" principle, i.e. it ignores the heat gains and losses between rooms and floors. This will tell you if your rad calculations for each room are near the mark.

The norm for heating up and intermittent use is about 10%. This is usually built into the calculator; so if you are at home all day you may not need this.

If you want a more accurate calculator, the Quinn Radiators (formerly Barlo) Heatloss Calculator can be downloaded for nothing.

The ultimate calculator is one which calculates the SAP rating of the house, such as Superheat 6 from SDA. This will set you back £329+vat; but there is a downloadable trial version which does everything, though it is time limited. But be warned it is very complicated!

Is it any better than the Barlo (Quinn) one I mentioned earlier? It can be downloaded for free; it won't even cost a pint :LOL:
