Heated rear window not working very effectively

The heaated rear view window on my 2001 Audi A6 Estate doesn't work as effectively as it used to. The heated wing mirrors work really well. The window does work a little bit in that the condensation starts to evaoprate round the elements it never completely clears the screen, the lines never meet if you know what I mean. There are elements in the side estate windows but these don't seem to work at all.

Is this just because the car is old or is there a something faulty that could be fixed?

For it to work at all, there must be some electrical continuity, check the connections for possible corrosion, the earth connection would be the first to check.
