Hi

Trying to understand heating systems, but am at the real basics stage

(at college but the course does not do heating I believe)

Combi boilers heat water on demand so when the hot tap is turned on the boiler fires up straight way, no need for controls?

Do some combi boilers have there own timer so this will switch room heating on at set times

If so would you get a boiler with no external controls at all

So that would be the simplest set up (but not a good idea)

I would like to know how you would attach controls to the boiler

If you have a combi boiler with no thermostat how is one wired to it..

Does the boiler perm live go to the stat which then send power back to the boiler to switch it on (or off)

I do find it hard to visualise the wiring diagrams at the moment. They seem too stripped down to the basic info. I cant relate that to actual conductor going into terminals.

Combi boilers tend to have everything built i to them, that is one of the reasons why they are called "combi".

Many have the programmer built in to them. You can connect external room stat and an external programmer to many. See page 29 on this typical model.
These only control the heating. Hot water is always 'on demand'
ie you turn on the hot tap and the boiler fires up to heat water as it is needed.
The most common set up is an integrated timer for the heating, no room thermostat but TRV valves on the radiators.
In this case, only a fused connection is needed at the boiler.

There are a lot of threads on this already. Like //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=51810
Or see the "Similar Topics" panel below.

Look on the Honeywell uk site for wiring diagrams of many other heating system variations.

Thats H/W supply and not C/H

They do and now with the more modern controls, the heating is regulated and never really turned off.

You can but it is wise and I believe it to be requirement, that a separate room stat is also installed

Simple set up would be to have controls integrated at the boiler but a requirement for separate room stat, they now can come wireless with a sensor at the boiler.
I would like to know how you would attach controls to the boiler .

This will depend on the controls you are connecting, if you do an on-line search for the control type, it is likely wiring instruction are downloadable.

I doubt that this would be allowed. Thermostatic control will be a requirement.

that or through a program control.
