I saw on a DIY/house program (the one in which he sprays your whole house white) that sockets have to be at a height of 45cm. Is this for new build only? I am redoing some of electrics in a 1960 semi detached...can I copy some of the existing sockets upstairs in that they are just above skirting? Downstairs had no sockets except spurs(!) so I am redoing downstairs completely...what height should I aim for?
many thanks
Derek

Part M of the building regs requires all switches and sockets to be reachable by someone in a wheelchair.

It specifies that sockets must not be lower than 450mm or higher than 1100mm.

This only applies to new builds and complete refurbishments.

BS7671 only says that sockets must be high enough to prevent them being damaged (by kicking or being clunked with a vac), and so the do not cause exessive strain on the lead from a plug top.

Personally I like the new heights, and would recommend their use even if you don't have to.

I can't find any reference to 'complete refurbishments' in the legislation.

I vaguely remember something about change of use. Any clues?
