Help Central Heating configuration question
I've just had a survey conducted on my heating system and got a quote now for nearly £2k to powerflush and reconfigure the system.

I could do with a little help to understand if this is something I could do or if I need to get a professional.

First, I can see that HSS offer powerflushing equipment for under £100 for the weekend. Is this a simple job or could I really mess up the system

Second, I have two pumps - 1 for the central heating and another for the hot water. The quote says i only need 1 and should insert motor valves. At the moment water pumps up the vent pipe into the feed tank where it circulates back into the system. I am told this is bad as it will corrode the rads and is probably caused due to overpumping.

Any help would be gratefully received. :D

If you are competent in draining down and taking each rad off the wall, and jet washing them in the garden, it's a DIY way of powerflushing, and free.

Is the pump situated just before the vent pipe? Try turning it down a setting.

Has having 2 pumps ever caused you problems? You sure the second one isn't for the shower or anything?

Why did you have a survey conducted, what were the problems you were having to have a survey taken?

Im guessing you have a hot water tank?

What make of boiler do you have?

Drain some water from your radiator either via drain off on the lockshield (preffered) or from the vent on the top of the rad, drain at least a pint, if you can see the bottom of the glass, the system water is fine.

Thanks for the above. I have 17 rads and a wife who's worried about the carpets so I would prefer to use a power flusher from the boiler - again if this is simple enough for an amateur?

I was looking to have a service contract for my heating system. The company I selected conducted a full survey before taking on the property which has resulted in a £2k estimate.

The vent pipe is before the two pumps. The engineer said that there is probably resistance in the pipework forward of the pumps which is contributing to the overflow. This is why he's suggested the powerflush. He also stated that theres differing heat from top to bottom on certain rads.

If I turn down the pumps the boiler overheats and indicates a fault + the hot water isn't hot enough.

No - having two pumps has not caused me any issues but I am unable to heat hot water quickly. It would seem the radiators need to reach temp before the system heats the water. Therefore the idea on adding values made sense to me!. The pumps are specifically for hot water and a separate one for the central heating. The engineer said that one of these pumps would be ample for the house and he can't understand why two have been installed.

Yes - I do have a hot water tank. The quote is also for new thermos for the hall & cylinder and controls

The boiler is a Potterton Kingfisher RSL100.

Many thanks for your help.
