HELP!! Dishwasher problem

I put on a wash at 12 midnight on Wednesday, it was still running at 7.00 am on Thurs morn although the dishes were washed. I can't get it to finish, have tried cutting off power but everytine I close the lid up the red light on the start button comes on and the machine starts to make a whir

ring noise although not washing etc. Can anyone help me please?
