I've just fitted a new extention from another extention. The problem is the new phone won't ring but yet I can dial out from it no problem.

I've checked the new phone is working ok by plugging it in the other extention and everything is fine. It's just the other phones in the house ring but not at the extention I've just fitted?

Cheers in advance.

Have you made sure you have got all the wiring correct, i.e. the same colour cores in terminal 2 at the the old and new extension, pin 3 the same at both ends and pin 5 the same at both ends? Are they screw terminals or push fit (IDC)?

How many telephones do you have plugged in? What type of phones -what are their REN numbers (you can normally have a REN of up to 4 on a normal phone line)?

Have you connected two wires or three? Have you actually wired an extension or just used a bodge it and stodge it kit from homebase?

A problem just like yours had me running round in circles a few years ago. I wired up the new socket correctly - or so I thought - using four-core cable between pins two, three, four and five but some phones refused to ring at the new socket. I checked all the connections at least twice. I even rang BT to see whether there was a length limit for reliable ringing. (They suggested 500 metres!)

I finally solved it by careful examination of the socket. THE TERMINALS WERE NUMBERED BACKWARDS!!!

Pins two and five can be reversed and the phone will still work but if you swap three with four it might not ring. I have found that some phones need the ringing signal on pin three but others don't; they detect the signal on two and five and ring anyway. My mother's cordless phone gets this wrong and rings once when she 'hangs up' her modem!

Since that episode I have always ignored the numbers on phone sockets and identified the terminals myself.
