Saw a minor leak under a bath last week. Pipe work is a mix of Hep, copper and black plastic I do not recognise. The leak is in the joint indicated in pictures, which is a mechanical joint on black plastic pipe which seems to be slightly larger than 22mm copper.

Does any one recognise the pipe and/or type of fitting. Do not really want to open it up until I know what I am dealing with.

I wonder if it is this part of some flat conversion with an old polythene water main running through it.

Black polythene water main pipes were one of the first to be used and to make connections you used specific compression fittings with liners inserted in the bore of the pipe at the ends for support.

The fittings for such pipe are often awkward to get hold of and usually only at some plumbers merchants. The diameters are different to modern plastic pipe.

One make of connectors is http://www.philmac.co.uk/

You should be able to undo it and twice round the compression ring with ptfe should sort it. just hope they fitted the inserts in the pipe. Its old class C alkathene
