Help identifying lintel

Hi folks. Just to briefly explain, I’m mid kitchen extension on the back of my house, it has an inner poured concrete lintel and no lintel on the external leaf. I had the calculations done for a steel rsj etc, it was all made and got delivered. When we attempted to fit it in place, we then realised that the concrete lintel inside actually spans 5.8m which is the entire width of the house rather than just halfway. It goes through the kitchen and the lounge. If I attach some pics, can somebody maybe explain how this concrete lintel is likely to be constructed? What are all the joins in it? It looks like blocks joined together?

The picture makes it look like the outer leaf is just hanging there but I do have props in place =D

Also just realised that the grooves or sections are the mortar lines from the soldier bricks. But still I’d like to know how this lintel is constructed, how was it poured and is it reinforced with steel?

Hi Brett, I’m betting it is a steel beam encased in concrete. You wouldn’t find a concrete lintel that big otherwise

Cast in-situ with the soldier bricks on the front already laid and acting as a shutter. There will be steel bar reinforcement.

I've just knocked a couple of these out (1960's build). Same construction as yours with the outer soldier course bonded on to the cast-in-situ lintel. In my case each lintel had 3 helical bars running the full length, approx 30mm diameter.

Thanks for the reply guys, yeh my it makes perfect sense to have some steel reinforcement inside. It just looks a bit unfinished as the concrete isn’t very neat so it made me wonder that’s all.
