I have some pre-BS7671 t&e and I am not sure if it is 4mm or 6mm and I dont have any spares laying around to compare it to. I measured the diameter of the line cable (with the black sheath) and it was about 5mm.

That is of no use as different cable manufacturers have and still do use various thicknesses of insulation.

What matters is the diameter of the copper wire, or for stranded the diameter of each strand and how many there are.

Is the cable already installed?

You could try and send a picture.

We MAY be able to tell, the earth in 4mm2 T+E is considerably smaller.

You go to a wholesalers and buy 1 metre of 4mm2, and 1 metre of 6mm2, to compare.

If you do this, you will have to strip the cables to reveal the copper - as it's the copper that's the important bit.

7 strands, just shy over 1mm thick each.
