Hi,

I'm new to this forum and not particularly good at DIY.

Last night i decided to bleed a radiator as it wasn't working properly. It improved it a bit, but not 100%. (this maybe totally irrelevent, but i thought i should mention it)

about an hour or so later there was a horrible squealing noise coming from the airing cupboard. This went on for about 2 minutes.

When i opened to airing cupboard, there was a component that seemed to be making a very load humming noise. It was a GRUNDFOS SELECTRIC 15-50.

So my wife and i turned the hot water and central heating off and decided to see what it was like the next day.

This morning i got up and turned to hot water and central heating on and the same humming noise was happening. Also, there is no hot water or central heating.

Being totally stupid when it comes to DIY i thought i would post on here before i get a plumber out who may charge me a fortune.

Reading on here the GRUNDFOS SELECTRIC appears to be a pump of some sort. is it likely to be a case that this is broke and needs replacing.

There is a silver thing in the middle of the pump that looks like it could turn, but i daren't touch that.

Can anybody help, it's starting to get cold now.

It sounds like your pump impeller has jammed - if you want to try to free it then try the following. Turn the central heating system off and try to start the pump by hand.

That's the bit you need to unscrew to get at the impeller - if you aren't confident then you need to call a heating engineer.

Thanks newboy.

I've been reading a few more posts on this.

A few people have said the silver thing in the middle of the pump is what you need to bleed the pump.

Is this the same thing as freeing the pump impeller?

no - bleeding the pump is letting any trapped air within the impeller chamber out. The impeller needs to be turned to try to free it - there may be some debris preventing the impeller from truning freely
