I've a Glow-worm central heating boiler with a Grundfos 15/50 pump. The pump is whirring (like it's blocked) but not firing the heating or water. It was working ok earlier this evening and I noticed it went cold... so it's stopped working just like that.
Do you think it's kaput? Or is there anything I can try?

Any help would be much appreciated.. the house is turning v cold rapidly..!

You could try............giving a little more info about your system and boiler type etc :)

Well, I've pressed the reset button on the boiler and it's working again but it's seems to be chugging away and making some funny noises.. It sounds like something's on its last legs...

Here's some more info:
Glow worm KFB Spacesaver boiler
Honeywell control unit
Sunvic thermostat dial downstairs
Grundfos Selectric 15/50 pump
Hercal Coil Indirect Cylinder (96L)

Any other details I can help supply? Do you think it sounds as if it might be ok now or should I prepare myself for another breakdown?!
Thanks!

New info:
The boiler seems not to turn on again (when adjusting with the thermostat) and just keeps whirring like before... until I press the reset button again.
Any thoughts?? Thanks.

I am ashamed to admit, it's not been serviced for several years!
Might the overheating be due to a faulty thermocouple? If so, it shouldn't be too expensive no?

Hi, no I've not bled the radiators. Do you think that would be worthwhile? The radiators seem to be heating ok (when the heating is functioning!).
Do you mean you don't think it's the thermocouple? Just to clarify, the pilot light goes out when the thermostat kicks in and I have to restart the pilot light with the reset button.

no the buton you press is thermal interrupter which knocks out pilot light when it gets too hot so pumps gone or you have a blockage

Ah ok thanks, I will bleed the radiators then to see if that clears it. The pump still whirrs but I guess that doesn't confirm anything...
The boiler has been banging of late when it's switched off - I understand this is due to it overheating.
I will probably call someone out tomorrow as it needs a service anyway.
Thanks

Try bleeding the rads, should have a forceful jet of water exit the bleed valve, when air (if any) has been let out. If not, then check water level in system. (Small tank in loft, should be about 1/3rd full of water.)

I've bled the radiators and still no joy.
Tried a few plumbers and they're busy till at least the end of the week.. brrr.

If anyone can recommend a plumber in the Huddersfield area or who can suggest anything else I can DIY, I would be most grateful, thanks.

It was the pump after all. Got it a new one fitted today. Thanks everyone :)
