Hi all, i need some help identifying my fireplaces and deciding what to do with them and how to restore them.

Firstly, they are just a facia if you know what I mean, just the front is metal, not the inside (stone/brick). Around it its tiled not metal so slightly different to typical cast iron fire places I have seen online.

How do I call just the part that sits above opening that can slide open?
and then how do I call rest of it i.e. metal surround around the decorated "flap"?

I thought they were cast iron but could they be steel (cast steel)?
I am really confused by the shiny bits. Some parts are what I would expect cast black Iron to look like but others are polished black with silver coming through.

I want to restore them to just matt black throughout. Tried grate polish but it doesnt cover shiny bits.

Havent tried paint stripper yet but it doesnt look like there is paint on it....

Can anyone advise what I am dealing with?

Why not go to the second hand shops in Stockbridge or Causewayside and show them your pictures and see what they say. The guys in those shops will know.

That is a good suggestion, I have been in Holyrood Salvage yard couple of times but never spoke with them about it so its a good suggestion

These are the types of fireplace that used to be 'Black Leaded' though what the actual Black Lead was called, or if you can even get it these days, is beyond me.
I'm sure there will probably be a modern version of it what ever it is.
