I have various steels to fit into my loft conversion, some of which run parallel with the joists, trimming stairs etc. My problem is that the joists are generally 147mm deep and the steels in question (which were specified at 152mm deep) vary from 151mm to 158mm. The point being that they will sit higher than the joists thereby lifting the floor.
Is it normal to floor around them and infill the top of the steel with a slip of thinner timber and then lay your finished flooring, carpet whatever, or would you route out part of the t&g sheets to accommodate the higher steel?
Or have I missed something at the design stage? When the calcs say 6" joists and 6" steels I thought they would be the same, but obviously not.
I could drop all of the ceilings to accommodate the difference but I'm sure this must be a common problem. Just wondered what the normal solution is. Much obliged for any advice!
