hinge fitting

what is the required measurement for the placement of the hinges on an internal door?
the doors im using are the 6 panel pine jobbies,ive seen examples of 7 inches down from top and bottom but would appreciate any advice

It's normaly 7" from the top and 9" up from the bottom, thats the way i've been told when i was younger,
