Hi, I wonder if anybody can help. We are having our roof retiled at the moment by a really nice builder but he is having problems getting the new hip tiles to lay flat. (I hope that makes sense.) The new hip tiles appear to be identical to the original ones except are slightly thicker. Could the difference in thickness be significant? Thanks, Jane

Using either a line or a hip ladder (a timber guide), I can't see why the tiles can not be laid straight.

The problem may be that the roof tiles are not cut properly or the tile laths are not flat and so the the roof tiles are kicking the hips up.

It is unlikely to be related to the thickness of the hip tiles

'bonnet' hips are designed to sit slightly ar*se up, with the void being completely filled with mortar.

Are they 'bonnet hips' or cover hips?
Make sure he's not mixing them up with ridge tiles if cover hips.

Yes the thickness could cause a slight problem.. dont mix the two different hip tiles...
