Hi I know this maybe should have been put under tools but I thought I may be answered more effectivly as the item is related mainly to electrical work.

Has anybody tried one of those backbox hole cutters and can tell me if they are any good at all, especially where brick is concerned. I was thinking of getting one but they are not cheap. Do they do a good job. Also is there particular makes to get and ones to avoid.

The ones I mean claim to cut a square hole for the backboxes to fit straight in.

I am a retired electrician and so would have use for one.

Any help or guidance appreciated

They are really only any good on softer building materials such as Thermalite blocks, standard breeze blocks and some soft bricks. They do not work on engineering brick or concrete, and i thing they may struggle with normal house brick. The one I had was made by Armeg. But after a while I found it quicker to use a hammer and chisel.

i have 1. the round cutter is good and goes thru just about anything, even hard brick. but the square cutter is only suitable for polystreyne so i use a SDS chisel for the rest

The Moorcut Quadcut seems to be a sturdy and sharp tool - heavier and sharper than the EBS/Armeg ones - if anything is going to go through brick it will be that one.

But the only two makes I've seen are the EBS/Armeg and Moorcut - there may be better ones.
