Hole in ceiling when decorating

I'm decorating a room at the moment. I've stripped the wallpaper from the walls and the ceiling. At the edge of the ceiling next to the wall, there is a small hole. The size of the hole is about 1 inch along the wall and just under 1 inch the other side.

The problem is, there is nothing above the hole in the ceiling so if I put pollyfilla in the hole, it just falls down to the floor because there is nothing to keep it in place.

What is the best way to fill in this type of hole?

Any advice appreciated.

You could try;
1) Expanding foam in the hole first, trim excess, fill over.
or
2) Stuffing some newspaper or cardboard or plasterboard in hole, then filling over.
or
3) Using a little bit of filler, wait till it sets, then a little bit more filler, wait till it sets, then a little bit more filler, wait till it sets, then a little bit more filler, wait till it sets, then a little bit more filler, wait...........................

Professional Decorators would normally tear out a page of the "Sporting Life" wedge that in the hole and then apply filler , sand down when set , apply two coats emulsion . Hole Gone .

So bronzea5 did you manage to fix it with any of the tips above ?

Asking because I have the same joyful task on my list for the 'holidays' next week ! Somebody pushed the paper up ripping it where it joins the coving...

For a job like that I'd make a sloppy mix of plaster/filler, daub that on some old newspaper, crumple the result, shove that into the hole and leave to set firm. Then go over with a skim coat of plaster/filler. Coincidentally, I've just done such a job this afternoon.

Yes I fixed the hole.

I used the #3 suggestion by sparkwright to add filler gradually, wait until it sets then add more filler until the hole is filled in.

Erm... fire risk...

Admittedly, not much of a risk though, and yes I have used paper in the past. I try not to though, these days I use two pack filler and slowly build it up. If need be I use a soft filler over the top (eg Redlite or RedDevil).
