This is the laser version of a TURPS process on the prostate gland. I had it done on Wednesday morning and was back on the train home at 11 o'clock the next day.
The worse bit was having the catheter taken out with the aid of a big cough and the first loo visit afterwards. I wish the nurse had told me what to expect because there was a lot of blood.
It some years that I have had this problem because the pills have been able to handle it but the last 6 months it got worse, hence the op.
I didn't realise I was that bad until after the op. I can now hit the back of the pan, a big woopee!!
When you go to the doctors about this problem its likely that you would not get it done with a laser but I pushed for it having been refused initially.

I've put a link to the op. which was done in the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, who looked after me like I was in a top class hotel.

Wow Wreckedit. My younger brother had trouble with his prostate some years ago and I met up with him in the local (not knowing he'd even had surgery). He sat there and said "Oh well, think I'll have a pee." and just sat there smiling. His missus laughed and told me " Pay no attention to him, he's got a bag on!" To which my brother burst out laughing hysterically. He then told me about the operation he'd had and how he was catheterised and it had to stay there for about a fortnight.
When he went back to have the catheter removed, he told me it was bloody painful. The nurse had to hold him down below whilst pulling the catheter out gently. Brought tears to my eyes just listening to him.
Anyway's I was at my doc's about 2 months ago about the strength of my waterworks flow and am now waiting for some more tests. Must admit, sometimes water flow is great and other days, I can be stood at the toilet straining to even dribble a bit.

Best of luck wreckedit though. ;) ;)

Last sept the doc. quite by accident found that I had chronic retention, he was amazed that I had no symptoms. I was whisked off to Urinary dept at local hospital who advised that I should self catheterise 3 times a day until they could get me in and do a Turp, which I did no problem till my Op on January 26. After the op, the surgeon came to see me and explained that once they got in there they found that my prostate was not enlarged so they did not do the Turp, they carried out a bladder neck incision as they found that the skin had thickened around the neck of the bladder.
After 3 days I was still retaining too much so I was discharged with a flip flow catheter installed, no bag, about 10cm of tube sticking out with a valve on it, so I had to pee by opening the valve. After 10 days the peripetetic nurse came to the house in the morning and and removed it. Then returned in the afternoon and did an ultra sound which found that I was still reaining around 400ml. So I am now back to self catheterising (which is not painful or uncomfortable) 3 times a day till I go back to see the surgeon on May 5th. I think the fear is that my bladder has streched beyond recovery and if that is the case I will have to self catheterise till I expire.
I otherwise feel very fit for a 63 year old and am kept very busy. Just wait and see what the man says on May 5

A few weeks and we'll have DIY brain surgery for beginners, or open heart surgery 2 , an advanced guide to opening the chest. ;) ;)

Sorry to here the problems you others are going through, so I can consider myself relatively lucky.
If you have to have a catheta for a long period of time after the op. suggests to me the crude way the TURPS is done. The reason I kept asking for a Laser version, not normally available on the NHS. except for special cases.

Good to get a heads up on alternatives to basic NHS ops

Oh I've read about that. The special case is a micro-penis.

-- and DIY radiotherapy should not be beyond the capabilities of a determined amateur physicist.
