This is a general question about what to do when I go on holiday.

Normally, when I go away I turn the water off at the stop-cock. In the house I used to have we had a standard boiler that heated hot water in a tank, and I understood that because we had a closed system the cerntral heating would not be effected if there was a water leak.

In our new house, we have a combi boiler (Valliant Turbo max). When I go on holiday in the winter, I want to turn the water off, but leave the heating on to stop the pipes getting frozen.

What will happen to the boiler if there is a water leak? I assume once all the water has drained through the system, because the stopcock is closed the boiler will just try to heat air? Will this cause the boiler to turn off and hence stop the heating working?

What's the best advice for going away witha combi boiler?

It has safeguards against running dry.

Turn the stopcock off and leave the boiler on. (I'm not sure if it has an inbuilt frost stat, check in your instructions) If it has a frost stat, leave the boiler on but with the heating switched off at the programmer, if it doesn't, turn the boiler stat down and have the heating on as usual.
