Hollow lime plaster

Renovating a victorian house which has lime plaster.

The plaster sounds hollow/crumbly in a number of places.

In this instance would it be best to take it back to brick?

Or can you just skim, if its hollow but still sound?

Be best to knock off the loose stuff, but you might be surprised how much comes off once you start

I'd go back to brick and board and skim.

Is boarding and skimming sounds good but i am concerned that as it is an external wall, it needs to breath

Would boarding and skimming allowbfor breathable walls or is this a damp issue waiting to happen?

A lot of properties of that period had a cavity behind the internal side of the latt n plaster walls to stop damp tracking through from the external walls and that might be why they sound hollow.

You can insulate with wood fibre board , lime skim on top, walls stay breathable.
