home wiring..

just moved into a brand new home-not enough outlets in the basement(unfinished.) I want to wire up one outlet(in the basement) on a wall where on the opposite side of the wall(bottom of the stairway) there is the light switches for the basement light ect. How/Can I tap into the light box from the switches? Do i have to run wires from the main box(across the room), or maybe from a light fixture from ceiling...any help would be great!

you can not take an outlet from a light switch or light fitiing.
