Hi all - I have this old Hoover One Touch Tumble Dryer .

9 times out of 10 the drum will revolve (and both ways fine without intervention and when it does, it dries the clothes normally , but every now and again I am in the other room and can tell the drum has stopped moving around. I go into room and its Humming/Buzzing , I turn it off at the dial, Open up the door and spin the drum a couple of times by hand then turn it back on and it will finish off drying the load as normal .

First springs to mind (even though I have not had it apart) is the big Motor Capacitor is on its way out and needs replacing .... but then again I am pretty sure its an induction brushless type motor .... do they use capacitors like the one I am thinking of? - secondly , the fascia is all electronic, if there is a motor capacitor will it be on the electronics board behind the fascia or will the capactor be down at the bottom of the tumble dryer by the motor instead?

Many thanks,
Andy.

Door latch and switch would be the first things I would test. Model number (label inside door possibly) would be helpful. Capacitors tend not to fail intermitently.

My Hoover heat pump dryer recently stopped spinning and just made a loud buzzing noise. I pulled the unit out and helped the drum to move- it started spinning. I replaced the capacitor and all was good.

It was one of these.

It is about 3.5" long and is positioned next to the motor, under the drum.

Rather than taking your's apart for testing, I guess you could leave the door open and wedge something in to make it think that the door is closed and when the drum refuses to spin, help it. If it spins, replace the capacitor.

Although I was annoyed that I had to replace the capacitor on a £700ish 3 year old machine, I was able to remove the massive amounts of fluff that had acquired.

And yes, induction motors have capacitors.
