My Hoover Nextra wouldn't drain so I tried undoing the filter at the front on the bottom to see if I could let some water out but it only dribbled slowly. Is this normal or should a full machine pour water out when I undo this? I’ve checked the drain hose for blockages and it all seems ok.

I don’t really know much about washing machines but I would say it sounds like the pump is running when I run a spin cycle. By removing the filter I can see a spinning impellor behind it about 2 inches across, would this be the pump?

The only strange thing was a few small flat bits of white plastic in the filter that I’m thinking could either be something accidentally loaded in with a wash or internal parts of the machine. Could they possibly be pump impellor blades? The machine is only 18 months old so I wouldn’t expect these to fall off easily!

In cases like this I usually take the machine outside to drain it so you don't flood the room. You then tip the machine up at an angle so you can see underneath it and remove the sump hose where it goes onto the bottom of the tub. You will prably find a sock or something stuck in the hose. I can't comment about the bits of plastic but you should be able to see if the pump impellor blades are intact.

Thanks fido, I'll give that a go! :) If I can't get it outside how much water do you think a 7.5kg capacity washing machine could potentially pour onto my kitchen floor?

I managed to drain enough off to disconnect the sump hose in the kitchen and drain it into a saucepan. Turned out to be a 10p lodged just before the pump. Thanks for the help! :)

Hi. I have exactly the same washer and same problem. There were foreign bodies in the filter. Removed those (after flooding!) and reassembled. The pump impellers are definitely going round but when we run a quick drain, no water comes out the drain pipe. It's not kinked. If I open the filter, water comes out the front, so the chamber has water but it isn't being passed through.

Do we have to put a lot more water in before the filtration chamber is pressurised for the pump to be effective, or are we likely to have a blockage in the route from the chamber to drain hose?

Many thanks in advance.

Get a wet vac and fill the machine then turn the dial to drain. Have the wet vac sucking onto the waste hose and see what you suck out with all the water.

That was an inspired and entirely successful suggestion! Plus I am now the proud owner of a wet/dry vac that seems like it could lift manhole covers! You have saved a bit of chRistmas. Thanks so much.

Glad you got it sorted, it's also good for unblocking the sink, shower & bath and removing air locks.

You can even use it as a leak blower.
