hi all, i hope someone out there can help. ive got a gravity fed domestic hot water system with a pump for CH. all fired by a gloworm BBU50 back boiler. The boiler was new 5 yrs ago and has ran problem free since. It is positioned on the ground floor.
Recently I have had my water cylinder, located on the first floor, relocated on the same floor to create more space. The problem arose after my plumber completed this move. The DHS works ok until the CH is turned on then we get air banging through all the 8 rads in the system. I noticed that water in my header tank, located in the loft directly above the cylinder, was hot and everytime the "banging" occured a jet of hot water was forced out of the expansion pipe. My plumber passed it off as trapped air and would clear itself up. I noticed, after checking diagrams off this site, that my feed pipe to the cylinder is fitted at the lower point with the expansion pipe tapped off that, and return pipe at the higher point tapped into the top up pipe from my tank. Can this cause air to be sucked down the expansion pipe into the system, then force the water back out?, or doesn't it matter which way they are fitted? It's driving my family nuts and me round the bend. Sorry if this was a little long winded but i've not got much hair left to pull out. Cheers
