What's a fair price for having a hot water tank replaced? I had a 42" X 18" tank fitted in 1996 at a cost of £175.08. It now needs replacing.

That sounds too cheap - but then you maybe got what you paid for???
I'd allow a day because it might be awkward.

Perhaps it was too cheap, but the replacement quote of £450 seemed way too high!

It's leaking from the side entry point of the heating coil, and from the large top union of the immersion heater.

Thanks for your responses

450 sounds more like it to supply and fit are your sure that 178 is not just for the cylinder?

£450 - depends how you work it. £150 retail for the cylinder, plus fittings, heating inhibitor, immersion heater.
Then 8 hours at £30/hour - that way it looks about right.
Depends if your man has boilers he can be fitting instead.

36x 16 10 metre head I did last month including new timber base £375.00 all in, no inhibitor though as new boiler being fitted soon so add on approx £15 to £20

If cylinder has already been changed 8 years ago pipework alterations during install should be minimal. Price will depend on wether guy wants to spend all day farting around or get job done quickly and efficently. Materials will be between £150 and £175 .

Following a trail of logic here:

The old cylinder is leaking around connectors. Plumber wants to change whole thing. This means he thinks that the old cylinder is bu**ered... overtightening the immersion heater into the cylinder can damage the cylinder, causing leaks. This would suggest that perhaps the guy who did it before wasn't a pro plumber (or was a very bad one!). Hence the low cost.

The general drift seems to be that £450 is not so bad after all. So I'll sleep a little easier tonight.

Thank you all for your input!
