Why the big deal about a couple of warm days?

My Mother is 84 and lives in a wooden house without air con in Sydney.

Temperarures in the 30s are the norm for summer. Temperatures in the low to mid forties are not rare either - but they survive.

Why is Britain so soft? They are even shutting schools!

Will we see all local authority housing fitted with air con in the next few years? It wouldn't surprise me a bit.

...and don't ask me why I've mis-spelt 'nonsense'.

It must be the heat.

And does she live on West side, with no cooling breezes? Or near the harbour? Or in a leafy suburb?

She lives in the hot, nasty suburb of Villawood. Do you know it?

No, I don't know anywhere nasty. When my sister moved out, she lived in Kings Cross. Do you know it?

Oh My God! I lived in the Cross for a year back in 1971 - it was a complete brothel of a place. Prostitutes, drugs and murder. Think Soho on steroids and that was Kings X back then.

40.000 dead people during the couple of warm days in 2003 might be a reason?
I know that was in French, but even so. some can stand the 'heat' better than others. In all cases: better safe than sorry.

And our Primary School is still holding their sports day today: almost no shade on the sport field, almost no breeze, crazy or not??

Really? All my sister's local friends seemed very pretty girls.

They had plenty of those way back then. Some things never change.

When I lived in Sydney, rugby matches were cancelled frequently and public transport disrupted because of adverse weather. We call it rain in the UK (and not the tropical downpour variety either, just bog standard rain)

They get the same rainfall we get (but much heavier). I lived there for 15 years - I saw plenty of it.

I recall a Melbourne winter 8°C surrounded by ski jackets etc ... must admit to wearing long sleeved shirt.
The day before and 'Up the road' in Cairns we had 28°C ..

This country's bonkers. Do any other countries go into a mad panic when they get snow? Or when temperatures hit 100'F? Its called the country's climate, its NORMAL. So give over issuing health warnings and stuff, its madness. We all know the dangers associated with hot weather, there is really no point.

I saw a bloke earlier, stood on a roof 4 storeys up in doncaster town centre, screwing some hooks into the wall (no safety harness or anything). I think he screwed one hook in, then sat down on the edge and had a fag. (i was watching him from the burger king opposite  )

I think you were in greater danger than he was

Better than McDonalds!

Although how anyone could go and sit in somewhere where hot food is being prepared, in this heat, is barking IMO!
