Is there anyone who fixes these for a living who can tell me how their reliability compares with Hoover and similar cheaper models?

What are the common faults on this model?

I used to fix them for a living

my2 p worth

they are very clever in theory (all w/d's)
you put dirty clothes in they come out washed and dried, brilliant

.................er no.

you can only dry half the wash load
you cant wash and dry at the same time*
the drying parts are mounted on the washing parts (has to withstand vibration)
no way for end user to clean/ de fluff condensor

I would always recomend one wm and one td so you can at least use one if other has fault, and you can put on 2nd wash load while first is drying*

If you still want one, i would get a hp m/c becuse parts are free when fitted by a hp engineer in 1st 5 years

I am fully aware of the limitations! The drying function is only used exceptionally but is very useful in an emergency.

What are the common faults on the WM440 though?

I can clean condenser and machine filter.

Whats "HP" when its not Hewlett Packard?

they all suffer from the same problem, overloading by user, blocked condensor, blocked filter, the last two are NOT user serviceable. vibration shakes dryer parts (not seen one actually fall off though)

cost too much for "emrgencies" as you put it, its a waste to get a wd and only use the w side

"emrgencies" as you put it. I dont see anyone saying that?

I once saw someone washing a single shirt in a launderete ( £2.50 plus soap ) and drying it ( 80p ).

It clearly was worth about £4 to go out that evening in a clean shirt.

I am quite happy to provide my tenant with a machine that will wash and in the case of an urgent need, dry.

As far as cleaning the lint and button trap, I can do that myself.

Thanks for your confirmation that these are quite OK machines in spite of the apparent common assertion that they are "rubish".

I already have two which are now about 9 months old and have given no trouble yet and an old 9926 which still works OK but sometimes gives a water dribble from the soap dispenser tray. Why is that?

i am worried about, its the condensor (take lid of and look, its the blue thing on the back of the outer drum), they get blocked with fluff, even as a hp engineer we never cleaned them, always changed them.

To be truthfull its to do with educating the person who uses the m/c

so long as they never overlaod it, NEVER put a mohair jumper or dogs towel in mc the condenors last for years (the condensor fans dont)

as for your 9926 dribbling they do that when they get old like people do.

no seriously, take out soap drawer clean inside of old soap scum, turning water pressure down slightly sometimes hels as does making sure mc stands slightly backwards
