i hope someone can help me with this washer. had it about 4 years and no problems. just returned from holidays with stacks of washing and every time i start the cycle i get a click from the washer and the whole house trips out. tried other appliance in same socket-no problem. fuse in washer plug is fine.
love to go buy new washer but spent up on hols!
any suggestions appreciated.
thanks,
ady

Could well be a faulty door switch but other possibilities include:
Motor fault
Chafed wires
Cracked heater element
Faulty On/Off switch

The easiest part to eliminate is the motor. If you take the lid off the machine you can unplug the wiring harness from the motor. If it still trips then the fault lies elsewhere. The same applies to the heater but it is not so easy to get at as you have to remove the cabinet front. The Door switch and On/Off switch can only be eliminated by substitution or by bypassing them (unless you have insulation test gear).

you say start the cycle, how far does it actually get?

i,e fills, moves ?

thanks fido and breezer.
the machine starts to fill for a split second before cutting out the electric.

i removed the wiring harness from the motor and the w/m starts to fill (not tripping the electric), so i assume the motor is duff. is it a straight forward motor replacement, or given the age of the machine time to invest in a new one?

it may be covered in carbon from the motor brushes, it is worth checking the motor for carbon deposits and pointing a vaccuum cleaner at it first, since this costs nothing

It is worth getting a new motor but unfortunately Hotpoint no longer supply the original GEC type motor or armatures. They offer a different type of motor which is probably more expensive but has the advantage that the carbon brushes last longer. I would recommend you repair this machine rather than go for a new appliance as what you have is a better design than many of the current models

i managed to get a re-con motor. motor installed and everything working again.
thanks for all your help on this brilliant site.

ady,

Can you tell me where you managed to get a recon motor from and what was the cost. Have a similar problem on a WM63.

Cheers

Richard
