hot wash leaves clothes with rust/oil type mark.
if this is rust where do i look for offending objects?

Almost certainly down to drum bearings which have failed or are about to fail. The early WMA models had a design fault with the bearing seal and most of them have suffered bearing failure at some point.

spin the drum by hand if its noisey bearings have gone, not a diy job also expensive, get new m/c (mind you if its under 5 years hp fitted parts are free
