It may just be a faulty door interlock, part number 1603292 but in some cases you get this symptom when there is a fault in the main computer circuit board.
This happened whilst I was out and when I came back the electric in the house had tripped. Does this sound like it is the latter of your suggestions? If so is it expensive to fix?
If it tripped the mains it may well have been a short circuit in the door interlock which often causes damage to the circuit board. It could be expensive so it might be worth calling Hotpoint if the machine is less than 5 years old.
