One option for extending our pokey kitchen is to build an extension. It may be slightly preferable to go to the side, but at the rear of the house (where the kitchen is) there isn't a huge gap to the boundary. I'd say it's 2.5m. The house is at an angle to the boundary, so the available space increases as you get closer to the front of the house.
The neighbour's house has a small porch on the side which goes fairly close to the boundary on their side, with a gate to the fence that runs between the two houses.
How close could we build a single-story extension, and would it be covered by permitted development or would we need to go for full planning permission? I wouldn't want to go right up to the boundary anyway, as that would cut of the outside route to the garden.
