We have just moved into a house with 9 Velux Windows in the roof and although I can open them they just swing shut again, is there a catch, bolt, screw I should tighten or something?
Depending on your roof pitch you may need to change the 'spring clips' that form part of the hinge mechanism - the standard clips are only rated to a certain pitch.
My windows are in a 16 degree roof and I had the same problem. Velux sent me the clips free of charge and now the windows stay open (although not very far).
