what could I cover the top of the post with? or can i treat it (and others)with something?doesnt matter about the bracket, just a long bolt (or threaded bar) from the outside of the panel all the way through the rail and the post, use some very big washers (50mm square steel plate with a hole drilled through) and you should get a good few more years. Cover the top of the post to keep it dry and you might get another decade!
I just had a poke at it and half the top crumbled to dust, I don't think the bolts will have much to hold onto..Cover it with a post cap, like

Make sure you get the right size, the cap will be a bit bigger than the post.
Treating it won't hurt but it won't be sufficient. Wood rots when it is in contact with water and air. If the top of the post is not covered then it will trap / retain water and will rot more pretty quickly.

I think its ok after the top bit. Its only 7 years old. The other posts seem okI imagine the bottom of this post would be pretty ropey too!
