Where I've tried to remove the screw various times the bit that you put the screwdriver in has worn away (if that makes sense).

How can I take the screw out, its holding a hinge thats in the wrong place and needs to be replaced.

Help!

If its brass i imagine its a slotted screw? One way would be to try and cut a new slot with a cold chisel, the other is to drill the head off. depending on the size of the screw use about a 5mm drill bit, dont drill to deep, just so the head comes off. You will be left a piece sticking out which you will be able to unscrew with a pair of locking pliers after the hinge is off.

You could get a damaged screw remover bit. There's a Trend "Snappy X-Out" set or a Boa "Grabit" bit available for about £15 (Machinemart).

A bit expensive for a one off job but I bought the Trend set, it worked fine and I've had reason to use it since so the £15 was money well spent.

if its a butt hinge on a door then i would lever the hinge off the frame , its a common problem i face when snagging ( someones got to do it  ) , use a flat screwdriver ( or similar) but be careful not to damage the frame ...crude but effective and it will save ya the cost of a removal bit :D

If you have access to the screw head, then an easy sol;ution is to use a junior Hacksaw to cut a small slot in the top of the screw, just enough to get a screwdriver in..then you can remove it.

One tip....NEVER PUT BRASS SCREWS IN WITH A DRILL/ELECTRIC DRIVER unless the screw is at least a No 8 and has a philips head...your asking for agro otherwise.
