How do I weatherproof exposed edges of tiles?

Having just removed an old conservatory, I had planned to just mortar up to the level of the tile surface all around the exposed edges in order to prevent moisture from working its way underneath.

However, I am not sure that is this the best solution.

Is there a better way to weatherproof these exposed edges and prevent the tiles from lifting at some point in the future?

what type of tiles are they??
are they frost resistant/are they siutable for outdoors??
also what grout was used?..not the cheap stuff i hope..?

I laid the tiles 25 years ago and forget the details. I think the tiles were placed on a bed of semi-dry sand and cement mix. The grout was of a type used at the time on industrial floors, and still looks well. The floor has never been re-grouted.

I'm not sure about the frost resistant properties of the tiles, but they have been in an unheated conservatory in Co Antrim for the duration without suffering any noticeable ill effects.

To be honest, I'm not convinced that, exposed to the weather, the floor will last too long, but I would like to take any steps, within reason, that will help to prolong its life.

Many thanks for your interest tictic.

how you mate.
ok the substrate sounds good.
as for the tiles themselves..well i cant advise,as we dont know what type they are mate..its ok they have been down for all them years, but they have never been exsposed to the elements mate,so its going to be a "hit an miss"...ere bud..
you could look into aquamix products(this is what i manly use mate)..the gold one(interal and external use) ..but i would advise you to google them, get the phone number and give them a call mate, before proceeding and if you find out what TYPE of tile it is they will advuse on sealer and what to use around the exsposed area.
there is other manufacturers for sealer etc out there..lithofin/fila/hg etc..
sorry cant be anymore help Scenes101,but all the best.
