As per the title.

I have a gas pipe laid in my front garden, I know where it is, but not how deep. I want to lift all the concrete to refurb the front garden but I assume if I use a electric breaker this could damage the pipe?

Is there any rules around digging up the concrete where a gas pipe is laid

If any use the pipe was laid by SGN about 5 years ago or so

I would use the breaker on areas more than a foot away from where the pipe is.

I'd then hand dig under the concrete above the gas pipe, and find it so you can work out whether you can use any tools to remove the rest of the concrete

@mikeey84 Showing my ignorance here, but would the gas pipe be laid within the concrete or below the slabs? I.e within the soil

No that's asking how to figure out how deep it is, not the method of digging. Anything more to add

No rules, as I mentioned on your other thread, maybe ask your gas transporter (SGN) first, they may help, they may not.

You could have asked on that thread was all I was saying.

My gas main was recently relaid/ replaced - the whole road.
They did the mains then pushed plastic up the iron? Feed pipe to the house.

All I can say is that the pipes under the pavement were a good 500mm down
They used vacuum extraction to dig the access holes so you could get a clear view of the services infrastructure.
The average drive/path would be thin by comparison

Look at your gas meter, if the pipe entering is yellow plastic, then likely the concrete predates the pipe - so the pipe, unless there are small rectangular patches of fresh concrete which has been removed/replaced, to use a mole, the pipe will be laid in the soil, away from most of the concrete. Prior to the yellow plastic pipe, they used steel pipe, which by now will likely be beginning to leak, but will be well below the concrete anyway.

My advice would be - shatter the concrete with a breaker, but avoid the breaker going below the concrete, and possibly piercing a pipe..

Use a bolster chisel (not a point) on the breaker.
