Evoke the Daemons of Urr and conjure Ball Lightning. Sometimes use the Gays of Nagash ( Warhammer nerds)

I use a sunflood above, this lights it up nicely when it starts getting dark.

white spirit and charcoal. once the white spirits have burned off the coals can keep themselves going until they're coated with ash.

i like gas bbqs for their simplicity but you just dont get the taste, you could bring a hotplate on an extension lead out to the garden for the same experience.

Agreed. I have a Gas BBQ. It's like having grilled food. You can buy 'hickory wood chips' however. You place them on a tray below the grill (you can hang a tray from the grill), and when the chips start heating up they smoulder and start smoking. The smoke is absorbed by the meat. There are a few variations of chips I believe each with its own unique aroma. I got some recently but haven't had a chance to give them a go.

I use the firelighter match thingies, leave them burning, come back later & find its out.

Search high & low for the bbq lighting fluid, cant find it- sod it & use the cooker grill instead :D

I have a quantity of pruned branches from a Bay tree, I've cut these short enough to go on the barbie so I can get rid of them in the fire. The woodsmoke possibly helps the flavour of meat.

So I start a combined wood/charcoal fire with just rolled up newspaper, and the wood gets hot enough for the charcoal to be alight when the flames die down.

I also have a lot of bay leaves, but these smoke a lot when you throw them on. Possibly because they're oily. Doesn't smell too good either, so they go in the compost.

Small firelighter at the bottom, followed by rolled up newspaper, then kindling. Wait for the kindling to really light up then throw on the charcoal. Et Voila!

Spray on some white spirit (that’s all expensive BBQ lighting fluid is anyway) & leave for 5-10 minutes to let it soak into the charcoal; a little more white spirit, leave for another couple of minutes, throw a match in there & stand back. I've been lighting em like that for over 20 years; you won’t need anything else. ;)

Personally, I get my servant to do it for me. Much easier, then my cook does the rest ;)

my gas bbq has coals on it, so as the fat drips onto the coals it smokes just the same as a charcoal bbq thus giving it the authentic bbq taste

I had a boat for over 20 years & although it had cooking facilities, the BBQ was our main source of cooking, long before it became the popular w/end pastime it now is. I also have a gas BBQ but no gas BBQ can ever replicate the authentic taste of food cooked over a lumpwood charcoal fire & I don’t mean the odd burnt sausage or cremated burger.

I always get mine going with a hair dryer, and make my own charcoal
